The Compass of the Personal Standard

People no longer learn by following a single fixed pathway. Yet our education and validation systems still measure learners against their standards rather than their own. In this essay, I reverse that perspective by placing the Personal Standard at the centre: the unique constellation of values, goals, and experiences through which each individual learns and makes meaning. The Compass demonstrates how this Personal Standard, in dialogue with qualification and occupational standards, provides direction for learning, valuing, and recognising learning. The learner is the elephant in the room of our education system: everyone talks about the learner, yet few engage the learner in dialogue. This essay places a compass in the learner’s hands—the Personal Standard—enabling each person to take ownership of the direction of their own learning.
